I am a journalist, linguist, and builder working at the intersection of media, language, and artificial intelligence — thirty years across print, radio, television, and digital media in Ethiopia and the United States.
I graduated from Addis Ababa University’s Ethiopian Languages and Literature program and began my career in 1992 at Addis Zemen, Ethiopia’s government daily. Through the 1990s I helped build the country’s emerging private press — writing for Efoyta magazine, editing Zena Addis, Ruh and Zepress, and serving five years as editor and editor-in-chief of The Reporter magazine.
In 2000 I co-founded Eletawi Addis, Ethiopia’s first private daily newspaper, serving as editor-in-chief and supervising more than 150 journalists in a newsroom whose story was covered by the BBC. Reporting assignments took me to Japan, Djibouti, South Korea, and Uganda.
I came to the United States in 2001 through the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Program — and stayed. In 2002 I founded Zethiopia, the first Ethiopian diaspora newspaper in the U.S., which grew into the D.C. area’s largest Ethiopian publication, expanded into radio, and convened the community through its anniversary galas.
I hosted and produced Ethiopian television for seven years, managed technology platforms for 245 African and Middle Eastern broadcasters at AudioNow, and spent five years (2020–2025) as an international broadcaster and translator at the Voice of America. My reporting has also aired on WAMU 88.5.
I am also a writer and poet, with several works published in Ethiopia, blending classical Amharic style with contemporary themes of identity, memory, and the Ethiopian experience. That work now lives on Ledesta (ledesta.com), my bilingual literary platform of essays, poetry, drama, daily ስንኞች, and audio productions — every piece written first in Amharic, then adapted into English.
Today my focus is Amharic Intelligence — a human-centered platform helping AI think in Amharic, through consultancy for global AI firms, specialized language services, published research, and education — alongside the rebirth of Zethiopia, teaching, translation, and Ledesta.

Dereje Desta is an Ethiopian-American journalist, linguist, and language-technology specialist with thirty years across print, radio, television, and digital media. A Voice of America international broadcaster and translator (2020–2025), he founded Zethiopia — the first Ethiopian diaspora newspaper in the United States, now reborn as a digital news intelligence magazine — after co-founding Ethiopia’s first private daily, Eletawi Addis, and editing The Reporter. A published writer and poet and a graduate of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopian Languages and Literature, he now leads Amharic Intelligence — a human-centered platform helping AI think in Amharic through consultancy for global AI firms, Amharic language services, and published research on Amharic AI benchmarking, speech recognition, and data collection — and Ledesta, a bilingual literary platform of Amharic essays, poetry, and drama with English adaptations. He has spoken at the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, George Washington University, and American University.
