Amharic Instructor • Linguist • Writer & Poet

Dereje Desta is an Amharic instructor, linguist, international broadcaster, and acclaimed writer whose work spans more than twenty-five years of teaching, storytelling, and cultural engagement. A graduate of Addis Ababa University’s Ethiopian Languages and Literature program, he has dedicated his career to strengthening Amharic language education in Ethiopia and the United States.

As a former International Broadcaster and Translator for the Voice of America (VOA), Dereje produced news, cultural programs, and interviews that reached global Amharic-speaking audiences, known for their clarity, depth, and cultural fluency. From 2002 to 2020, he also served as Publisher and Executive Editor of Zethiopia Newspaper, guiding one of the most influential Ethiopian diaspora publications for nearly two decades.

Dereje is widely recognized as a writer and poet, with several works published in Ethiopia. His prose and poetry blend classical Amharic style with contemporary themes, reflecting on identity, society, memory, and the evolving Ethiopian experience. His writings have appeared in literary magazines, cultural journals, and diaspora publications, establishing him as a respected cultural voice.

He is currently developing Amharic Intelligence (Amharic AI)—an emerging digital platform designed to enhance Amharic learning, provide linguistic tools, and expand cultural resources through modern technology and AI innovation. The project is in the making, representing his commitment to preserving and advancing Ethiopian language and culture in the digital age.
